|The handset that talks to you while you drive. Having a cell phone with GPS is certainly not new, but one that talks to you while you drive and tells you the shortest route to reach the destination certainly is. The SCH W399 from Samsung is probably the first one in the market that claims to do so.|
The W399 is a GSM triband / CDMA1x terminal. The technology being used here is quite similar to the Motorola A732. The A732 if one may recall, had text to speech functionality and finger writing ability. Similarly the W399 also has a touch pad display which can be written on with the finger. More over, its intelligent so it learns each user;s chacracter writing style and integrates that knowledge into its text engine to make it faster and quicker with experience.
The clamshell design of the phone has an integrated swivel camera (180 degrees swivel) and has a resolution of 1.3 mega pixels. The Samsung W399 has a built-in memory of 57 megabytes, but has no expansion slot. This is really regrettable since the phone has the makings of being a super hit handset. The W399 has most of what is asked for by users, and this includes music playing (MP3 files) on the loudspeaker. In order to transfer data, the phone has been equipped with Bluetooth and USB which should serve most purposes.
The Samsung SCH W399 has a English to Chinese dictionary and a full HTML browser to facilitate browsing. The large display of the phone is 2.2 inches in size and can support 260,000 colors with a resolution of 176 x 220 pixels (the same as series 60 phones). Since the design is of clamshell type, it has an outer display but its OLED with only 16 colors. The design of the handset is extremely sleek and thus attractive. The dimensions of this baby are 93 x 50 x 22 mm and it weighs only 90 grams. At an expected price of 600 USD, the W399 seems to be an excellent buy.
