After a long wait, the third generation of the USB interface is available. Called SuperSpeed USB, the USB Implementers Forum announced at CES 2010 that the first products to use their new SuperSpeed USB 3.0 are now available.
SuperSpeed USB brings significant performance enhancements to the ubiquitous USB standard, while remaining compatible with the billions of USB enabled devices currently deployed in the market. SuperSpeed USB will deliver 10x the data transfer rate of Hi-Speed USB (from 40 MB/s to 400 MB/s), as well as improved power efficiency(900 mA, an 80% increase over USB 2.0 at a registered maximum of 500 mA).
Preliminary tests showed that the new was possible of transferring a 25GB file in just under 70 seconds - a huge improvement over USB 2.0, which would take 14 minutes, while with USB 1.0 it would take a 9.3 hours to transfer the same amount of data!
